Starlink is accepting pre-orders!

After a very successful Beta program, Starlink has opened up their service for pre-order applications! Tri-State area coverage expected mid-late this year.
To start the process, simply visit their website at https://www.starlink.com/.

I checked my address on Long Island, and found that this area is expected to receive coverage sometime later this year.

Speed tests from current beta testers are finding speeds of 100-150Mbps Download with 20-30ms latency.
As Starlink launches more satellites, this speed is expected to improve over time.

The company currently has over 1,000 satellites in orbit. The overall goal is to build a high-speed internet service stretching across the world. SpaceX has said it wants to launch up to 42,000 satellites by mid-2027. They are currently launching 60x satellites at a time on their Falcon 9 rocket, every 2-3 weeks on average.

  1. This is good news! My question is, who installs it? I live in a condo, so need to get permission from our HOA to put a dish on the outside of my unit. Have we any information about how well it works in bad weather? I personally can’t wait to drop Altice. Price is competitive.

    1. There is no organization that installs it. The equipment is mailed to you. You and I both (I’m in the same complex) would likely need approval from the Condo Board.

Maybe if enough people ask about it, we can get some traction. I’m sure if we brought it up at the next meeting, others would be interested.

As for the weather, initial reports are hopeful. https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/spacex-starlink-services-prove-strong-in-the-rain

I know they do mention that the dish will heat up if it detects snow.
